I like your no-frills approach on how to get help. I found that Skype can also be a good tool for learning, you can find people that are also attempting to learn more Japanese, as well as Japanese that are wanting to learn english. There are many that are shy and such, and may be hard to approach, but now and then you find one that will enjoy helping you as much as you help them.

It’s pretty productive.

I studied for two years before coming to Japan, but after arriving here, I learned more in the first few months of living here than I did in two years of studying back home. But, I’m glad I did buckle down in the beginning and give myself a good foundation that has been easy to build upon since arriving. I’m still nowhere near where I want to be in terms of reading and writing (and really, I’d like to be a lot more fluent), but I agree with you; If I hadn’t set goals for myself in the beginning, I wouldn’t have some of the friends I have now (the ones who don’t speak, nor want to speak English).

I really agree with finding a Japanese friend to help you learn. That has helped me the most out of everything I have tried so far.

There are a lot of Japanese penpal type sites that you can start out on. And Japanese people actually do use them. I was suprised by the response I got just by posting a message saying I was looking to practice my Japanese. You can return the favor by helping them with their English.

I say it was a good video, i like how you’re straight up and realistic, there is no point of being a Mr. nice guy. I once thought of learning japanese but I have came to realize its too time consuming and takes too long to be good at it. Anybody who say’s I can be good in japanese in 1 year is living in la la land. Maybe i’ll take a first year japanese course in university just to know the basics, might come in handy when I visit japan.

anyways good stuff so far, keep vlogging.

Yea~h! New video! I do read and all, but videos are a bonus. I find that hearing someone else talk about the joys and challenges of learning Japanese (as opposed to just hearing myself talk about it) gives me a motivational boost. I think I told Koichi the same thing, but hey–iz true. (How do you know each other anyway???).

ALSO, you’ve said before that talking to a computer seems awkward to you. But if you let it stop you, then the mean/nasty/smug Japanese-language-vloggers like applemilk1988 will take over YouTube (have you *seen* her Pretty Intense Japanese Lessons?). So yeah….didn’t mean to rant…..PEACE IN!
